Jose Perea – Member of the Month
August 18, 2009 in Uncategorized by Latinos A Morir
For the month of August we would like to recognize Jose Perea as LAM’s member of the month.
Jose is from Cali, Colombia and came to the United States in 2006 to pursue a PhD in Mathematics at Stanford University. He is studying applied topology which involves finding invariants of “form” for “topological” space. These ideas have been around for about 8 years to develop new techniques to analyze large clouds of data, understanding the connectivity of networks, etc.
Jose is a rumbero at heart and has been a loyal LAM supporter from the early days. He is always the first on the dance floor and usually the last one to leave the event. Being from Cali has made him a dancing machine with lady LAM members quoting “Jose makes me feel like I know how to dance”.
When he’s not deep in thought or dancing the night away, he’s promoting a project titled “Fundacion Color de Colombia”. Color de Colombia’s goal is to praise and exalt the successes of the Afro Colombian community. “Colombia is a country with deep social inequalities supremely traditionally classist but in the process of change. To close these gaps, I believe it is important to support such projects,” Jose states. To learn more about this organization or to learn how to donate (volunteer time or monetary) please visit their Facebook Fan page.
In all, Jose represents the new generation of Latinos who are pursuing higher education, promote good to the world, and have fun doing it! When you see him at the next LAM event, please buy him a drink or give him a high five! If you’re interested in applying to graduate school, or need tutoring for math, you know who to contact.
Don’t be afraid to leave a comment below!
By being member of the month, he will receive VIP entrance for the rest of the year and get two free drinks at our next event.
If you believe you or someone you know merits recognition, please send an email to info@latinosamorir.com with the subject line titled ‘Member of the Month’. In the body, please answer the following questions (keep answers short and informational):
- Name of nominee
- Previous/Current accomplishment(s)
- Community involvement story
- Number of LAM events attended (rough estimate OK)
- A biography of nominee (where born, grew up, profession, family, anything else interesting)
- Project they would like to promote during their feature (for example, if Giovanni, the founder of LAM, would be featured in a magazine, he would like to promote Latinos A Morir)
