List of Films and schedule from SF Latino Film Festival:

Undertow

Thursday September 16 at 7:30 Roxie Theatre
Peru-2009-100 min.
Director: Javier Fuentes-Léon

“Miguel is a young married fisherman in a small coastal town in Peru, conservative and with unique traditions around death. Mariela is his wife and she’s just about to have a baby. Santiago is the big city outsider- an artist, agnostic, and openly gay. When Santiago passes, Miguel struggles to accept who he really is for fear of losing those he loves.” This film has won awards at festivals the world over- including Sundance and Frameline.

La Yuma

Friday, September 17th at 7:30 pm, Roxie Theatre
Nicaragua-2009, 91 min.
Director- Florence Jagu

This is the story of Yuma, a strong-willed and rebellious girl from the poor neighborhoods of Managua who dreams of being a boxer.  In her poor neighborhood, gangs fight for control of the street. In her home, there’s no love. She dreams of the ring, energy and agile feet and hands. They are also her only options. A chance encounter: Yuma meets Ernesto, a journalism student from the better side of the city. Despite their differences, they fall in love, attracted to each other by their shared desire to find their own space in the world.  Yuma’s story is a slice of life deeply rooted in Nicaragua, today. A daily Nicaragua and unknown, which contrasts with the image of the country abroad, essentially related to natural disasters, revolutions and wars.

Leo’s Room

Friday, September 17th at 9 PM, Roxie Theatre
Uruguay-2009, 92 min.
Director: Enrique Bunchichio

In the heart of Montevideo, the affable but secretly troubled Leo wraps himself in the comfort of his small rented room, unmotivated to finish his college thesis or find a job, and content with infrequent visits from his girlfriend. After their six-month relationship ends, Leo begins to break out of his shell by cruising the Internet for a new companion, enlisting the aid of a sympathetic therapist along the way. However, it isn’t until he has a chance reunion with a classmate that he is forced to consider the true meaning of his reclusive lifestyle, and a future outside the metaphoric safety of his room. Featuring an affecting soundtrack and an equally endearing cast of characters, director Enrique Buchichio’s affirming drama is a unique vision of isolation and coming-of-age set against a modern tale of romance and friendship.

Speed Dating Fundraiser – Registration Now Open

1:12 am in Events by Beatriz Quezada

The official speed dating sign-up is now available through Evite. We are hosting a speed dating fundraiser for the benefit of the Leukemia & Lymphoma Society through Team in Training. We are still adding eligible bachelors to this event (until we max out at 20), but the sign-up for the ladies is now open.

REGISTER HERE

This event has attracted a variety of men throughout the Bay Area, the majority with at least a baccalaureate degree, many with specialized certifications, some entrepreneurs, and even a Rhodes Scholar! If you’ve been searching for high-caliber men in the Bay Area, here’s your chance to find them under one roof.

We’re requesting that everyone arrive at 6:00 p.m. to begin mingling in the bar area. While we want everyone to be relaxed, we caution you against excessive drinking as it may impair your abilities during the speed dating process. The event itself begins at 6:30 p.m. at which point we’ll ask everyone to head downstairs at approximately 6:25 p.m. to begin on time.

After the event ends, everyone will be invited back to the bar area to continue mingling with the participants. We’re encouraging everyone to follow-up with the people they found interesting during the speed dating process and may not have had enough time to ask all their questions.

We thank you for supporting the fundraising efforts of the Leukemia and Lymphoma Society through Team in Training. Not only will you possibly find the right man for you, but you’re supporting a great cause.

Thank you for your help in this battle against blood cancers.
