Laura stole my name. I was born first, so….technically, ummm, that name is mine. Except, mi tocaya has actually managed to make me look better by sharing my name. Yet, with her Good Will Hunting brains, 1950s movie star looks (worthy of a starring role opposite Pedro Infante), and a personality that is deserves numerous red carpet award, I must admit – Laura Brady makes all Lauras look good.
From a young age, Laura dedicated her career to her passion – social change – which is backed up by graduate degrees – an M.A. and a PhD in Educational Psychology from the University of Northern Colorado graduating at the age of 26. During studies, she was actively involved in Cumbres, a mentor program aimed at pairing students with members of the community and university staff to provide students with an education /personal support. She was also working for ETS (Educational Testing Services) in Princeton, NJ developing a framework that would help ETS better test ELL (English Language Learners) students.
“Wow, que extraordinaria” was the first thing that came to mind when I met Laura. She was glowing. A Latina with a shiny new marriage and an even newer doctorate degree, Laura has worked hard to achieve both things. Personally, Laura is a happy woman. Looking at her Facebook pictures, one is a witness not only to what a gorgeous bride she was, but what a dedicated, beautiful wife she now is – because that is what happiness does to you. Felicidades por el amor que te rodea.
Currently, Laura is part of EDGE-ucation (Philanthropy Branch of LAM) as an Executive Director and Co-founder and Lemonade Day as a Project Manager for the East Bay/ Contra Costa County.
Laura is not only an active LAM member, present at many of its social events, but has just signed on as the Executive Director for the Philanthropy Branch of LAM, aimed at overseeing community programs that focus on academic achievement in certain underrepresented communities. I am a busy, happy Laura. Although now, thanks to Laura Brady, I’m a busier person – I just signed up for mentoring. Because, really, I don’t want to be the loser Laura. Just sayin’…. Now, you, yes YOU – sign up to mentor! De a de veras, you don’t want to be that LAM member….who doesn’t have a mentor. Because in order to grow as a community, we need to, we should want to, give back.
