About 111 Minna Gallery
Established in 1993 in downtown San Francisco, 111 Minna Gallery is in the business of Art and Leisure. The gallery showcases a unique blend of local and international artists, world class DJ’s, live performance, and film screenings in an elegantly urban and ever-changing 4,000 square foot space. The gallery is open to the public Tuesday through Friday 12-5 pm and nightly on a rotating schedule for special events.

The space at 111 Minna Gallery evokes the dramatic effect of an urban industrial warehouse with 16 feet high walls, floor to ceiling windows facing out on 2nd Street, exposed piping overhead and original hardwood floors.

The sophisticated modern design of the space is animated by a 25 foot long rolled steel and copper bar created by Bay Area sculptor Jud Bergeron, multifunctional theatrical lighting designed by Terry Ohm of Impact Lighting and an eclectic mix of modern and antique furnishings.

111 Minna Gallery transforms itself every 6 weeks with rotating exhibitions of contemporary art, providing an ever-changing, dynamic atmosphere. The L-shaped gallery measures over 4,200 square feet and can be divided into smaller, more intimate spaces and can accommodate groups of 75 to 500 people.

You can find 111 Minna gallery between Howard and Mission at 2nd Street in the SOMA district of downtown San Francisco, walking distance from the Moscone Center, Yerba Buena Gardens, SFMOMA and the Embarcadero.

Lemonade Day – Teaching kids entrepreneurship

11:23 pm in Philanthropy by Giovanni Gonzalez

Get ready LAM! There is a neat program arriving for the first time to the Bay Area on May 15…it’s Lemonade Day!

Invite your kids, neighbors, mentees, nephews, and/or students, to register for this great event! Go to http://sanfrancisco.lemonadeday.org/sign-up.aspx and register online or simply Download the application and mail it or fax it! All the information is on the application.

During that day, thousands of kids in the Bay Area (San Francisco and Eat Bay) will be setting up their lemonade stands and selling their lemonade to the entire community. Everyone will be participating. So get ready because you will be either making lemonade or buying lemonade.

Businesses, city leaders, and youth organizations will be participating to teach our youth the value of money and how to operate their own business – a lemonade stand.

So how does Lemonade Day works?

  1. Children sign up to participate with a supporting adult
  2. When noticed, children and adults will pick up backpacks at their designated location that includes more information, ideas, and cool contests
  3. Before Lemonade Day arrives, both kids and adults start to prepare for the big day (develop a secret recipe for their lemonade, thinking about how to attract potential costumers, how to build a cool lemonade stand, etc…)
  4. On May 15, children set up their stands and make $$$

So start telling everyone about it! LAM is a proud sponsor of Lemonade Day and is ready to compete with other organizations for the most lemonade stands.

Stay tuned to find out when the registration forms will be rolling out, and when to start signing up for such a neat program!

If you want to get involved, have access to youth, or just to check out what Lemonade Day is all about, email me at  llarabrady@gmail.com and check out lemonadeday.org

Members and Non-members welcomed!

Join Latinos A Morir in an effort to help reduce the achievement gap in underrepresented groups. LAM is in the process of starting a non-profit organization (name is in the works) that will help tackle this very problem. Our very own LAM member, Laura Brady Ph.D, will be the director of this new organization.

The goal is to create a non-profit where every member is involved, yes, that means you! The first program that we’re working on is in helping Puente by providing mentors (since we have amazing successful members). If you would like to be a mentor, please fill this form out.

The funds collected at this fundraiser will be used to:

- pay for legal, state, and federal fees to incorporate a non-profit
- create the mentorship program
- pay for background checks for our mentors [by law we need background checks]
- create a career day to offer high schools

Of course that we will be maintain our costs as low as possible and utilize the extra funds to help create other programs including scholarships, career day, etc [the sky is the limit!]. We have already received pro-bono aid from three LAM members in legal and financial services (and many others have offered their legal services!). If you are a graphic designer and/or website developer, we would love to receive your help! Please contact us at info@latinosamorir.com.

We hope you can join us at this event! LAM will be at a new venue, with new amazing DJs playing the best of Latin music, but always the same energy! 5A5 is San Francisco’s first ‘steak lounge’ – a sleek & modern take on the traditional steakhouse, blending the ambiance of a contemporary restaurant with that of a vibrant cocktail lounge. 5A5 provides a sophisticated and fun lounge experience while sipping on a tasty cocktail, a smooth glass of wine, or some bubbly with your friends while surrounded by the beautiful, sexy ambience.

Cannot attend the event but you would like to donate?

PRESS-RELEASE: LAM starts a non-profit organization

PROFESSIONAL LATINO GROUP WANTS TO PUSH STUDENTS TO THE EDGE
Latino organization aims to increase graduation rates in the Bay Area

School? Peer pressure? Money? Religion? Mom and dad? Or perhaps something below the radar that educators might not understand or miss? What is behind the statistics that more than 87% Latina/o, 88% Native Americans, and 85% African Americans, among other underrepresented young adults in the U.S., never receive a Bachelor’s degree? (Chicano Studies Research Center, 2006). These findings alerted Latinos A Morir (LAM) members, a professional organization for lovers of Latin American culture, to take action and make a difference in the Bay Area. A partnership between Giovanni Gonzalez (LAM CEO) and Laura Lara-Brady Ph.D. (LAM member) was initiated to create a non-profit organization with the goal of increasing the graduation rates of underrepresented groups in the Bay Area and pushing students’ educational boundaries to the edge.

The EDGE-ucation non-profit organization will work towards diminishing the achievement gap, by providing mentoring services and local field trips for high school students in the Bay Area. The first school to receive its services will be Hayward High School via the Puente program (http://www.puente.net/), where 89 students are already lined up to be matched with talented and successful LAM members in the community. To become a mentor, please visit: http://latinosamorir.com/philanthropy/mentoring-program/mentor-application/.

The first fundraiser event for this organization, Rumba for a Cause, will be held at 5A5, 244 Jackson Street SF, Friday March 5th at 10pm. One hundred percent of the profits will go towards the EDGE-ucation organization. People not attending the event can also make a donation through the website http://latinosamorir.com/rumba-for-a-cause-lam-non-profit/

The low numbers of high school/college graduation rates and college attainment among underrepresented groups is not a reason to believe that they cannot achieve academically, but a reason to question how we, as a community and educators, are supporting their academic success (Lara, 2009).

Laura Lara-Brady, Ph.D. is a member of LAM and the new LAM Philanthropy Director. She received her Doctorate in Educational Psychology from the University of Northern Colorado and wrote a dissertation that studied: A Mixed Method Study of the Factors Associated with the Academic Achievement of Latina/o College Students From Predominantly Mexican American Backgrounds: A Strengths-Based Approach.

Latinos A Morir (LAM) was founded in 2001 as an informal group of friends, and has now grown to a network of approximately 3,000+ members who love the Latin American culture. LAM is now the largest and most successful Latin American social group in the Bay Area that promotes Latin American culture through social events.

Life-Long Learning at SHCP

1:04 am in Articles, Philanthropy by Giovanni Gonzalez

And LAM did it again! Our involvement with the community is growing and we cannot be anymore excited!

Today, we started the day early at the Sacred Heart Cathedral Preparatory School with Edgar ‘ShoBoy’ Sotelo, and it was a great success. Vocational/Life-Long Learning Day is an event that brings alumni and other successful community members to share their success stories and tips with students interested in their industry. We joined Edgar today to talk with high school students about potential opportunities in the entertainment industry after high school. This included information on internships, job openings, and insider tips.

It was definitely a different environment and crowd than the one from our previous trip. For starters, the school grounds were gated and sprinkled with trimmed trees and flowers. The building was in great shape and the classrooms were very bright and airy. Students were fascinated on the topic and they were very engaged with the guest speakers. We also found that there is a strong community of parents always willing to help in all of the school events.

Edgar, as usual, captivated the audience’s interest and his speech focused on how to climb the entertainment ladder, specifically in radio. Edgar encouraged students to never give up and to keep focus on the price, even if it means going to school and having 3 jobs on the side. Another speaker in the same session, emphasized the movie industry and gave students a valuable insight in how people get hired and move up to higher positions.

During session breaks, we met remarkable people, among them Honorable Troy Nunley ’82, Mr. Franco Finn, and Mr. Garrett Dempsey among others.

After lunch we left with this thought: imagine how great it would be to offer the same educational opportunities to people in other less affluent communities?!

And our dream continues….
